I found this post onTCW by Coach Petty of Cal Baptist. I know we have no seniors, but I want to make sure all our wretlers are aware of this program, so that next year you can apply.
Nearly $40,000 for College - IMPORTANT reminder!
www.calgrants.org/
The link above is for the Cal Grant program that helps school to become more affordable. I want to encourage ALL student (wrestling or not) who are looking to go to college in CA to log onto this website and apply for this grant to see if you qualify; it could mean nearly $40K over four years.
The deadline is March 2 to have your FAFSA and GPA verified submitted by your school [even for JC transfers and students who graduated last year and did not apply for the grant or did not enter college last year].
I remember being frustrated last year when I spoke to so many recruits that had no knowledge about this grant in which they were qualified. So, instead of expecting that "full ride" that is nearly impossible to obtain at any university when programs have 9 scholarships; it is hard to justify giving one scholarship to one person leaving 25 or more athletes to divide 8. Instead, I encourage you (athletes, parents and coaches) to be proactive in looking for ways to supplement the funding of your education by looking into grants other scholarships as well as academic scholarships.
Remimber to do the following:
* File your FAFSA (www.fafsa.gov)
* See the HS Counselors office for GPA verification
* Take the SAT and ACT
* Finish the school strong academically and athletically
* Stay out of "stupid" situations (Alcohol, drugs, fighting, stealing, cheating, ECT)
* Apply to the colleges of your choice (do not wait for any coach to contact you if you want to go to a particular school - you go for it)
* Contact the college for a visit ASAP
Finally, I want to encourage all of those who plan on wrestling in college next year to consider a CA school (JC or 4-year) first; we have many choices. With all of the talent that is here in CA, we can dominate on a national level if the colleges programs are supported.
To get more information on CBU wrestling; log onto www.cbulancers.com (wrestling/recruiting) and complete a questionnaire AND email us at: jpetty@calbaptist.edu after you have completed the questionnaire.
Best wishes for the remainder of the season.........finish with "no regrets"
Yours in Wrestling
